Surah Az-Zumar, known as “The Troops,” is a Makki surah that centers on Tawheed, sincerity, and Allah’s boundless mercy. Its greatest benefit comes from verse 39:53, which scholars call the “ayah of hope” because Allah directly tells those who have sinned not to despair of His mercy, for He forgives all sins. This verse alone brings immense comfort and lifts guilt when read with understanding. The Prophet ﷺ would recite Surah Az-Zumar every night before sleeping, and scholars mention this habit as a means of protection in the grave and on the Day of Judgment. The surah repeatedly emphasizes worshipping Allah with pure intention, helping you check your niyyah and avoid hidden shirk. Verses describing death, the soul, and the groups entering Paradise and Hell build strong awareness of the Akhirah and reduce fear of death, which is why some recite it near a person who is ill.
